Happy 104th birthday to Margaret Thurgood (Broadbent)

Published on March 3, 2024

Old Girl, Margaret Thurgood (Broadbent) (1936) celebrated her 104th birthday on Sunday, 18 February 2024. She has written the piece below to share with other Old Girls.

"I went to Somerville House age 7 year, and left 10 years later being Dux of the School in 1936. I was always thankful for Somerville and still say the same prayer daily we used to say at Assembly, though in a more modern form.

I attained a Science degree at the University of Queensland, and then worked for the Department of Primary Industries as assistant to the Parasitologist. I married and had one son and later adopted a daughter. After my husband's death at age 50 I worked in the agricultural chemical lab until I remarried. I was married to both husbands for 26 years each.

After my second husband died in 1999 I later joined a retirement village, Aveo Durack, and have been there in Independent living for 22 years.

I am thankful for all my blessings and spend my time knitting blankets for home and overseas, and reading books, and talking to my many friends."

Margaret is pictured with her local Federal Member of Parliament, Milton Dick who visits the knitting group, and who came to her 100th birthday party.
